Splinterheads

When this movie started, I thought it was going to be very funny, however, the first scene opener with
Thomas Middleditch singing the Ramones, and then acting silly soon was replaced with bad banter, dumb characters, and abysmal dialogue. I did, however, notice Rachel Taylor, GORGEOUS--- Australian actress who I presume will get more roles soon! She was fun to watch and is naturally beautiful. This story featured dolt carnies who became troublesome to Middleditch's character as he fell for Galaxy, played by  Taylor and her fauxhawk donning boyfriend tries to keep them apart. Not a stellar storyline. Some parts were so ridiculous that I was minimally amused, mostly not! However, Middleditch did carry this film ... his banter was funny at times!
I give this a 2 for occasional good music.

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men

Wow, the second to end scene in this film is totally intense, and engaging. It made me think. I had no idea that John Krasinski of the office wrote this screenplay with the author of the book, David Foster Wallace, post modern writer, who has since passed! I just picked it based upon the title. Once I view the film, I go to IMDB for all the info. This film was edited in an interesting way, and was edgy and thought provoking. At times, it seemed to be dialogue laden, but it had to be to get the points across clearly. I love Julianne Nicholson and wonder why she isn't in more films. She is a great actress! This film had some substantial talent associated with it, like: Timothy Hutton, Will Arnett, Chris Messina, and of course, John Krasinski! I am shocked and silenced by the ending. At times, I did find it a bit boring, but the end really sealed it for me. We all know a great and impactful ending can literally save a film, and this was the case. Julianne played an academic interviewing men about relationships and how they feel about love and women in an attempt to find out why her boyfriend broke up with her, played by John Krasinski.  Much of it seemed realistic and it definitely resonates. I did like this film now that I sit and reflect. It is heavy, and the editing made it seem more hip and unusual.

Kick Ass

This film was completely outrageous, entertaining and thoroughly shocking at times! I love it! It was Quentin Tarantino violent at times with the most shocking dialogue not characteristic to American cinema which lead me to research the writers and directors and wasn't surprised to find out that Matthew Vaughn was attached to it; as he was attached to such films as Snatch and Layer Cake! What threw me off was the American actors and an American story mixed with a British style of language WITHOUT the British, if that makes sense! This film was exciting, ludicrous, bordering on ridiculous at every moment which made it one deliriously and quite delicious ride! Chloe Moretz should get an Oscar for this role, but she won't because her role was totally controversial! She is an 11 year old ASSASSIN! I dug her no nonsense delivery and shocking language. It made for a wild ride of SURPRISE..This movie should have been titled HIT GIRL, not KICK ASS. From her first scene with her father, played skillfully by Nicholas Cage, where she delights the viewer dropping the "F" bomb to a non reactive father as they eat casually. Like I said, LUDICROUS.. and FABULOUS. Anyone wanting to be entertained, should definitely rent this DVD. If you are easily offended, don't bother, but if you have a irreverent sense of humor, and like a little Quentin-esque type humor, RUN AND GET IT NOW! Don't let the superhero spin turn you off of a raucous good time!

Chloe

This film was SO ANNOYING! I honestly am embarrassed that I watched this, but my saving grace is that Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore are in it! Why they would do a film such as this is beyond me. I think this was a case of, "much better on paper." The director failed to create the Noir film that he should have. It was way too contrived and was just abysmal on so many levels. Amanda Seyfried as Chloe was annoying as well. At times, she looked like a 15 year old kid- disturbing for a temptress, if you ask me! I just don't get the appeal there--- to have a kid-like girl as a sexual object or creature. Julianne Moore plays a physician married to a college professor played by Liam Neeson. Julianne's character is, of course, predictably, insecure and thinks her husband is cheating on her and employs a sneaky tactic with which to snag him in the act. She picks a twisted young, and lonely girl who winds up intertwining herself into Julianne's life- as she has a crush on HER! Whatever.. so NOT BELIEVABLE and ANNOYING. Don't bother.. I can't even continue to write about this joke of a film.

The Baxter

This film had some good actors in it, Paul Rudd, Michelle Williams and Elizabeth Banks, and was made in 2005. The premise was clever, however, the story line was predictable. Does "the baxter" ever really get the "pretty girl?" AND... the pretty girl is always SOOOO BORING compared to the "baxter girl." The Baxter is always a little off-beat, odd, and here, I feel that they wanted to depict the "baxter" as a person who is ordinary. Michelle Williams as the "baxter" girl was anything but ordinary. She was odd, dressed cool and sang bizarre songs at nightclubs. My kind of girl! Whomever made this-- HELLO! Were you trying to say "baxters" are not the greatest.. or were you saying that they are pretty cool? The male "baxter" of this film, played by Michael Showalter, the Director and Writer was annoyingly ordinary and clumsy. Michael Showalter listen to me!--- YOU SHOULD HAVE MADE HIM A LITTLE COOLER OFF BEAT instead of dorky and uncool! The "baxter" in this film WON as far as I am concerned because the alternative of Elizabeth Banks' character, Caroline Swan (fitting last name) was less than stellar. Don't we all know ordinary pretty girls who are just SO BORING?

The Runaways

I loved this film and story! Of course, I did.. because it featured girls being empowered, cool and creative! YAY~ that is the epitome of what excites me about life! This film should have been much bigger in the box office than it was but I gather it will get rave reviews from DVD watchers! Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie are two stellar actresses and carry the s*&t outta this film! For me personally, the way Kristen carried herself as Joan Jett was entirely bad a$$! I loved the attitude of these girls while playing in the band. More women should grab hold of their metaphorical "c*&ks" in life and show strength and balls. To me, so attractive and cool. I "got it" from the inset to the last scene and enjoyed every minute of this story. It def makes you respect and revere Joan Jett! She was gracious enough to step back although she was the main talent of the Runaways to let Cherie take the spot, and was smart enough to continue and be the lead for the Blackhearts. I just love a cool woman!

There is so much to be said for confidence and conviction and the desire to want to be something and to make it happen! I love 70s style, and a tough, tomboy feel and look is so sexy to me. It says I know who I am, I like it, and I am not falling prey to the way men think women should look and behave. In so many ways, I wish more girls would watch this and find their inner c%&K! YAH! Rock it ...

Youth in Revolt

The dialoge in this script is phenomenal. I never use the word Phenom, but a lot of words that aren't typically used are thrown around in this film and it is hilarious. I keep re-hearing Vijay saying, "It isn't a salient concern." Who says that at age 16?! I loved the intellectuality of the conversations between the nerdy friends! This film reinforces that desire in me to use the English language to its absolute fullest. Michael Cera is always plays brilliantly the nerdy outcast in some dilemma usually dealing with coming of age, and this film doesn't differ. He is trying to lose his virginity but falls in love in the process. However, his French alter-ego, Francois, shows a different side to Cera's otherwise colloquial geekiness. However, this nerd was hardly pedestrian. Although, in the end, he claims that he got the "girl to fall in love with Nick Twisp." I loved this film so much that I watched it twice within a 24 hour time period. The first time much funnier, the second, I wanted to focus on the dialogue to hear what I missed when I was laughing the first time. This is Napolean Dynamite-esque without the extreme campy characters. These characters are smart.

Paper Heart

This was a documentary on Love and what it means to be in love as Charlyne Yi, actress, comedian has never been in love. She travels all over the US and then to Paris to interview people to figure out what love is and if she has ever been in love. Charlyne plays herself and plays a type cast dork in most films with the same genderless strange mannerisms and with her ever present distinct voice. I like the fact that she just doesn't give a sh*t about how she looks, what she wears and pretty much how she acts. She is simply a person, not a girly girl and considers herself more of a dude than anything else. She winds up dating Michael Cera and the film documents some of their courtship. Courtship of the Nerds.. which I loved to watch! There is something to be said for nerd love. It is fascinating and very wholesome. No one trying to be something they aren't. What we do learn is that nerd love is just as awkward as cool love... I prefer Nerd Love..seems more real to me somehow. Less jaded, less orchestrated and sort of a mess. I can visualize Charlyne talking about this idea to her friends and see how it all unfolded.

Love and Other Disasters

This was a light, airy comedy featuring one of my favorites, Brittany Murphy, who I cannot believe is gone. She is charming as Jax, an American girl who grew up in London obsessed with one of my favorite films, Breakfast at Tiffany's. She emulates Audrey Hepburn's character a bit, admittedly, and is stuck in a back and forth with an ex who she doesn't love. The story centers around the dramatic and vapid lives of a few friends in the midst of trying to find love. Jax loves to be around gay men because they want nothing from her, and she feels safe. She mistakenly identifies a photographer's assistant at work as being gay and befriends him. The story grows and it is very predictable. I enjoyed it but found it ultra corny at times but not corny enough for me to totally turn it off. I think I was eagerly awaiting Jax's next outfit, killer eye makeup and hairstyle!

The Vicious Kind

One miserable, closed off brother with family secrets picks up his brother from school with his new girlfriend to come home for a break from college and finds himself interested in his brother's girl. The abysmal brother, Caleb, played by Adam Scott is a chain smoking, non sleeping  Ahole of a man with no quality of life yet finds himself overly protective of his younger brother.  This film delves into the psyche of a damaged man who keeps himself shut off but finds himself strangely drawn to his brother's dark girlfriend played by Brittany Snow who has her own set of problems. Magnetic fields of misery attract the two, while the younger brother, Peter is the light that holds them altogether.  The father is played skillfully by JK Simmons (Juno's father.. who is stunning again).  This is a heavy movie and I enjoyed it. It is not often a film depicts secretive male suffering which is also quite humorous, a black comedy.  That is Neil Labute!

Personal Effects

This was a dark portrayal of a couple families that lost loved ones to death. Ashton's character, Walter, was particularly disturbed by the loss of his sister.  He plays a young man who was away wrestling and comes home to attend court for the conviction of his sister's killer. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Linda, a woman who lost her husband and she has a special needs teenager. Ashton and Linda become close due to attending support meetings for loss of loved ones. I like that Ashton Kutcher does these small indie films with some dark content. Ashton Kutcher is not only an attractive young actor, he is obviously substance. I knew I liked him when I saw him on that 70s show. That part was not indicative of how his life would play out. He is multi-dimensional. Michelle Pfeiffer is believable as the older woman who attracts Walter, as she is physically appealing.  They develop a strange bond which eventually keeps them together, surprisingly. This film moved deliberately slow, but clearly illustrated why something like this could happen due to extenuating circumstances. It was ok to watch, due to M.F. and AK. They are fun to watch together.

I give it a 3. ( I rate hard. 3 isn't terrible, but it isn't great either)

A Home at the End of the World

This is a very interesting story of a boy named Bobby Morrow, played by Colin Farrell, who was influenced greatly by his teenage brother who had him take window pane acid at 9 years old! The beginning scenes of this film make a statement. They create a reason for the way Bobby is as he grows and loses his entire family. I liked the 80s feel and Robin Wright Penn as Clare was magnificent with her fire red hair and super short punk bangs. There was a lot of love in this film.  Bobby was a good boy who gave love freely to everyone. He moved everyone he came into contact with because he didn't have an agenda, was very easy going and accepting. He didn't think much and just gave.  Everyone found him to be  an angelic and sweet presence. This is a love story which grows complicated due to the confusing issue of no boundaries. Bobby's teen years are spent living with his high school friend's family where he becomes part of the family easily and the mom loves Bobby and allows him to break some traditional rules with her son and she learns about love from Bobby. To me, Bobby is sort of a metaphor for love but the complications that come along with that nature are what creates the story.  I loved it.

It's Complicated

This is a story about a divorced couple who gets a bit confused one drunken eve and stumble upon illicit behavior. They then confuse the behavior and try on a love affair to the detriment of furthering a newly formed attachment for the woman and destroying the man's marriage.  In the end, yawn, we discover that they don't make it, but are able to move past it and live in productive manner from here on out. Was it entertaining at times? Yes, when Meryl Streep's character smokes pot with Steve Martin's character. But did it drum up anything unusual for me? Nope. I can see what the premise was as the script was written. It was a good enough script, but somehow big budgets, big stars, and big studio features can bastardize the attempt. It cheapens it and the grit of the independent only enhances a situation, for me anyway. I am not saying I hated it, but it felt corny, contrived and got a little lost on me. The dark wasn't dark enough, the light, not light enough. Although, at times, Meryl looked seriously stunning.

Nine

This was a visual extravaganza, but not for everyone. It read like a foreign film and was the story of an auteur who is having difficulty coming up with a premise for a new film given his last two were flops. He is Fellini-esque in his fame and his ability to rapture with images.  Guido Contini is a visual man who has created fantasy through his Italian films. He has been the arbiter of style, fashion and a life style inherent to those Italians in the "know." He is a leader, a trend setter who is attempting to make a come back and finds himself in the quandary of real vs fantasy. He is a lover of the feminine form, the creator of the female muse and a dark and mysterious character that his actresses, wife and creative partners are growing tired of. The film consists of a narcissistic visionary who realizes that through his fantasy driven life which has served him well artistically has now endangered his ability to maintain his reality. I could identify with his flaws, but I can see how the average viewer can grow tired of the singing and show style communication that this film delivered. I was ok with it, but don't see many people sticking to it.  Definitely turn on ENGLISH subtitles so that you don't miss a beat with their often poorly executed Italian accents.

I give it a 5 (because I could identify with much of the sentiment)

Damage

This film was STEAMY, sexy, and illicit! It makes me view Jeremy Irons in a whole new light! Juliette Binoche plays a beautiful temptress, Anna, who is dating Jeremy Iron's character's (Stephen Fleming) son. She is troubled, dark and mysteriously sad due to a childhood tragedy. Jeremy Irons plays a high profile political figure in England who meets Anna at a cocktail party and falls in love with her (love at first sight). He is so taken with her that he throws away all reason and begins to meet her for dangerous liasons. This film illustrates how a man of power can be foolish and throw everything away for a sexual liason. How everything can go so madly awry and be devoid of all reason all for the thrill of attraction! The ending is particularly poignant as Stephen Fleming sits in front of a blown up picture of his son, the woman, and himself alone in a foreign country realizing that the woman was really just anyone else. This film was disturbing, romantic, and complicated.

I give it a 10 (because it sheds some light on subject matter which seems to plague many powerful men)

Keith

This is a different coming of age story that has a depth unseen often in high school stories. An eccentric and depressed loner kid in high school preys upon a popular girl and plays all the right games to get her to fall for him by being unusual and distant. His hatred for everything she stands for propels him into a cat and mouse game. She eventually loses interest in the superficial trappings of popularity while he becomes more and more secretive and aloof. The girl learns quickly, by her interactions with him that she is doing everything for the wrong reasons. The deep feelings that develop are unexpected on both characters parts and the story ends tragically. The ending is bitter sweet as she finds out more than she bargained for, and he realizes that she is not as bad as he originally thought. The script is well written and the film is interesting throughout. It is psychological and compelling... and pulls a bit on the heart strings.

Half Baked

Dave Chappelle co-wrote this ludicrous script and since I appreciate him, I thought I would spend the time to watch it. I was in a mood where I didn't feel like thinking and wanted to see something outlandish, and unreasonable. I found it in Half Baked. The story surrounds a few best childhood friends, the opener was particularly absurd and engaging (3 young boys trying pot for the first time and getting hooked.. at around age 10).. They grow up and in their mid 20s have failed to amount to anything due to their love of maryjane and inactivity. The film addresses all the sterotypical pot use beliefs. The friends smoke some pot and get so stoned that one of them must go out to buy food for their munchies. While out, he happens across a NYC police horse and manages to feed the horse all the food before getting home. The horse dies from reactions to doritos, etc. and the friend is arrested. The friends must figure out a way to bail him out of jail and become pot dealers to raise the money. You can figure out the rest. It is no Grandma's Boy..

Greenberg

I knew this had to be 100 minutes of uncomfortable and socially awkward characters because Noah Baumbach had a lot to do with it! He co-wrote this silly film with Jennifer Jason Leigh, another one of my all time faves. Where has she been? She is almost as fun to watch act as Parker Posey, and equally underrated, if you ask me. Ben Stiller is like Adam Sandler in Punch Drunk Love, completely out of his usual comedic role, but somehow it all works in the end. Ben Stiller plays Greenberg, a cynical new yorker fresh out of the Psych ward in NYC and in LA to watch his brother's house and dog while he vacations in Viet Nam with his family. Greta Gerwig plays Florence, Greenberg's brother's personal assistant with whom Greenberg becomes oddly attached. The story wasn't super strong, and was more a voyeuristic glimpse into a couple weeks of Greenberg's miserly, strange and absurd life. Stiller played Greenberg brilliantly and there were many moments of sheer comedic, dry, and witty genius peppered in through out this oddity of a film. We loved it. It was honest, gritty, silly, raw and authentic. It isn't a feel good film, and ends abruptly, but what else would you expect from Noah Baumbach?

Date Night

It is so difficult to create a comedic film from beginning to end, but it was done, in fine form, without being too crass! I knew the winning combination of Fey and Carrell as the married couple, The Fosters, was going to be worth the price of admission. Clever, witty, hilarious, and fun... The film opened up light and airy, depicting perfectly how a relationship can become complacent. The secret to success in a film is creating characters people like or can relate to in some way. All of us have had the comfortable, and not so exciting relationship, and the Fosters are comfortable and within the parameters of "happy." One date night goes awry and they see parts of eachother they didn't know existed and at the end have a much broader appreciation of one another. Such a great premise for a story everyone can relate to with hugely funny scenes and clever dialogue throughout.

Ghost of Girlfriends Past

Sort of corny, I know, but this film did have its moments of clarity and taught me some things about how men can think, and of course there is always the moral to the story of regret in terms of men treating women poorly and then wanting them back later on.. YAWN.. what ELSE is new? But for a big studio piece, I was interested in watching the entire film, in two sittings, and it was fun at times, and clever. Michael Douglas plays the womanizing ghost that takes Matthew McC,s (such a long and annoying last name) on a journey through his past to illustrate his wrongs. Jennifer Garner plays the childhood and young adult hood sweetheart who Matt Mc's character screws over and then realizes his love for her.. YAWN.. I really, really want to love Jennifer Garner, but her skeletal looks and ears get in the way. I cannot stop focusing on them! All I hear in my mind when I see her on screen is her from JUNO, saying, "Hi baby", to Juno's pregnant stomach. I think Garner is talented for sure, but I am so put off by her appearance.. ugh, I feel terrible saying that because I can find beauty in just about everything. The story was cute, and catchy and cliche but watchable, and a good girl flick if you are chilling and just want to zone out.

Hot Tub Time Machine

After seeing a good review on NYC television, I opted to give this a try. Although I didn't laugh out loud much, it was alright. What made it ok was the end, a total surprise. Much of it was corny, including the hot tub reactivation method, the premise, not a strong one, but it was a comedy after all. Some of the funnier parts were the Crispin Glover "arm" scenes. I wasn't wowed by it, but somehow walked out thinking it was a pretty good film. It is about a group of old friends who go away after a friend's attempted suicide to Kodiak where they all had the best night of their lives, and they must relive it in order to ensure that John Cusak's character's nephew is born. I am a little confused by my dull reaction because I didn't hate it. I loved the 80s music but didn't care for the scenes with Cusak getting to know the girl.. I didn't get the connection between them, but then again, it is a comedy.. so keeping that in mind.. it was pretty good.

I give it a 7. I will have to watch it again on video, and I bet I enjoy it more then.

I Love You Alice B. Toklas

This movie was HILARIOUS! I never knew where the term "switched on" came from! I use that phrase occasionally. Peter Sellers plays Harold Fein, an uptight attorney who eventually falls for the "groovy" lifestyle once he tastes the Alice B. Toklas recipe for exquisitely mind altering brownies! He tosses aside his old life and conforms into the kindest hippy imagineable. I was laughing and listening a lot to the dialogue of the hippies because it reigns similar to those spiritual practices today! Has the world become HIPPY CRAZY in the name of SPIRITUALITY? Except now there is science to back up the benefits of these practices with respect to health, happiness and overall peaceful feeling! This movie makes me want to see more films from this era and it was completely entertaining! I loved it!

A look at a two murders from every character that was directly or indirectly involved! The film takes us on a journey from several different points of view into some unfortunate circumstances surrounding the murder of two people. Each character and scene is directly involved by accident as the two murders were an accident. Dark desperate people do dark desperate things. I wonder why we don't see Rachel Leigh Cook anymore, she had promise and I like to watch Hilary Swank because she always gets the most out of a role squeezing every ounce out that she possibly can. Shawn Hotosy is awesome too, and hasn't been around lately either. Patrick Swayze is also in this film, playing the weird, protective dad of Rachel Leigh Cook's character! If you liked the film "GO", you will more than likely enjoy this film.

Brick

The dialogue in this film is quite unique and reminiscent of a 1950's film noir detective story. I re-watched this with my friend Mark last night and he kept saying, this is so "David Mamet" with respect to the writing.. sing songy, and poetic. I found the dialogue to be most annoying, most of the time. If it wasn't for the great artistic direction and the overall uniqueness of the film, I would have rated it a 0 due to having to pay far too much attention and feeling like I was missing important information. On the flip side, it was hilarious to see highschool kids use 1950s film noir slang! Quite clever. The cinematography was interesting and the presentation of the overall situation was somewhat mysterious and that is what will keep the viewer. I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but why the two last names for him, is he married? His character was interesting because he was fearless but physically small. He put himself in crazy situations repeatedly. Mark and I kept wondering, where are all the kid's parents in all of this! ha ha ha.. seriously, these kids were participating in murder, drugs, and guns and only one parent was around, the Pin's.. and she would serve them cereal and milk, etc. That was why this film got a 4, bizarre and odd situations made it a lively watch. The story centers around a murder of a classmate and Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Brandon who becomes an instant detective and gets to the bottom of the crime by playing each dumb kid involved.

Hero Tomorrow

Not being a real comic book reader or being privy to the world of the comic book peeps, I am not sure what to make of this film. I appreciated the Director's vision but the acting was wooden. Not all performances were totally wooden, but most were. The main character, David, played be dreadlock ridden Perren Hedderson was the worst actor of them all, and he needed to be GREAT to carry this first film from Director Ted Sikora! This film genre is titled comedy on IMDB and I didn't really see much that was funny, much more tragic for the main character to be such a MESS. I thought the costume was well done but I didn't relate and or connect with any of the characters and that is what is essential for a successful movie. They pulled off some of the special effects and the back and forth storytelling, but I found it a bit depressing overall. The story was depressing, the characters were depressing and not at all vibrant and likeable. The story centers around a comic book junkie who created a character Apama, and desperately wants to publish and we get to see his frustrations and him trying to make Apama come alive in more ways than one.

Kicking and Screaming

I have to say almost each and every line is worth quoting again and again in life! Why is it that men always remember quotes from films and women don't? There should be an entire web site devoted to Kicking and Screaming quotes because many of them are genius!
Max: "What I used to able to pass off as a bad summer could now potentially turn into a bad life"
The story centers around a group of guys who just graduated college and are having a difficult time integrating themselves into the real world. It is realistic, the guys are cute and Parker Posey is in it! Enough reason for me to watch it! The dialogue is witty, dry, and hilarious through out most of the movie. Although I never laughed hard out loud, inside I was appreciating it immensely. Such a clever writer.. and cast perfectly. It was created in 1995, but for me, it is timeless. This is a DVD to buy and add to your collection! We all know someone who is like ONE of the characters (if you are somewhat elitist, literature driven, and were a little off beat and cool (self titled)...
